Chapter 6

Map Of Mysteries

At nine-thirty, Warren called to check on me while I was making dinner. I told him I was home and safe. He wanted to come over, but I explained I already had plans and asked for a raincheck. Then, I asked whether he had any new news on the DNA regarding the case. He said the results hadn't come back yet, but he'd share as soon as he knew.

I thanked him and hung up.

While I boiled some water, I cut up a loaf of French bread, buttered it, and rubbed it with garlic before placing it on a cookie sheet. I'd decided on creamy noodles with pan-seared meatballs, a salad, and bread. Some might call it a girl-dinner since most men didn't care for pasta (at least according to Warren), but I called it delicious.

In a separate pan, I melted some butter and added chopped garlic. Once the pasta was ready, I added a little of the salted pasta water to the butter and garlic, then the noodles, followed by salt and white pepper, lemon, and finally cream. While that was keeping warm, I broke up some lettuce, cut a tomato and cucumber, and dressed it with olive oil, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper.

A little before ten, I put the bread in the oven and got out some plates, silverware, napkins, and glasses. A refreshing white wine would go great with dinner.

At precisely ten o'clock, Matilda and Bethany walked in. For dessert, Matilda brought some double chocolate cookies filled with peppermint cream.

"Thank you," I said, eyeing them while my mouth watered. "Shall we eat? It's ready."

We talked about our day as we dished up our plates. I poured the wine, and we sat at the counter. The conversation was mostly easygoing. A nice reprieve from all that was happening.

After we finished our cookies, I couldn't hold back any longer. "Did Bethany tell you about the locator spell I wanted to perform?" I asked Matilda as I magically cleaned up the kitchen. I'd seen an episode of Bewitched several years ago and laughed since they mostly got witch magic right. The kitchen clean-up was much like how they showed Samantha Stephens do it. At the time, I'd wondered if a witch had been called to help out on the show. Turned out the woman who played Endora was a witch, and she'd shared secrets, which was why the show was canceled. She got in trouble with Mystical Management, and the show was put to bed.

"Yes, she mentioned it." Matilda followed me over to the table where I'd laid out a map of the United States.

"What are we looking for?" Bethany asked.

"Something dragon-related," I said. Then, I reconsidered and explained precisely what it was and what it was for. It would help our spell if they had as many details as possible.

"You have everything but this amulet?" Bethany asked.

"I will soon enough." My giddiness was back. "And there's something else." A smile broke over my face.

Matilda and Bethany looked at me like I was a little nutty.
